A Toast To Literacy

Featuring “A Literary Life” by BJ Hollars

Mix and mingle with fellow literacy fans before engaging in an intimate storytelling event with local author and literacy aficionado BJ Hollars. This evening will be an opportunity to learn more about the mission of Literacy Chippewa Valley with some delightful literacy themed libations and hors-d’oeuvres.

Ray Bradbury famously remarked that writers must “Jump off the cliff and build [their] wings on the way down.” For the past three decades, author B.J. Hollars has done just that, leaping from one metaphorical cliff to another in search of the literary life. Through it all, every setback and minor success ultimately led him to where he needed to be: within listening distance of the next big story. Join Hollars for a candid conversation on the importance of literacy in his own life, and why it matters to us all.

B.J. Hollars is the author of several books, including Go West Young Man: A Father and Son Rediscover America, Midwestern Strange: Hunting Monsters, Martians and the Weird in Flyover Country, and The Road South: Personal Stories of the Freedom Riders. He is the recipient of the Truman Capote Prize for Literary Nonfiction, the Anne B. and James B. McMillan Prize, the Council of Wisconsin Writers’ Blei-Derleth Award, and the Society of Midland Authors Award. A professor and columnist, he lives and works in Eau Claire, Wisconsin.
