Literacy Changes Everything
The 22st annual ScrabbleBee is coming to The Brewing Projekt in Eau Claire on May 2, 2024, and we are looking for sponsors, players and volunteers!
Talk to your company about chipping in to help support literacy education in the Chippewa Valley. Everything helps, but there are additional benefits to sponsoring at the tile level and up- including free team registrations, brand recognition during the event, and inclusion in the ScrabbleBee marketing campaign leading up to May 2nd.
Registration is $35 for an individual, or $200 for a full team of 6 players.
Sign-in begins at 5:00pm, games begin at 6:00pm

What is ScrabbleBee?
ScrabbleBee is our annual fundraising event where our guests play Scrabble. There are two ways our participants can play:

Hare version
-
Tortoise version
Here’s how it works: “Hare” teams work with each other – and against the clock – to build as many high-scoring words on the Scrabble® board as possible. Three games are played throughout the evening, and the team with the highest total score for all three games is the winner.
In addition to the fast-paced play, there is also a “Tortoise” division that plays traditional Scrabble®. Other activities include a silent auction, raffles, prizes, and food.
English Language Learners
English is a difficult language to learn. But we can help!

Citizenship
Students receive assistance from an instructor and/or trained tutors in preparation for the citizenship application process. Preparation may include assistance in completing materials, preparing for the written exam and oral interview at the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services. Students prepare for the English test which has three components: reading, writing, and speaking. The civics test covers important U.S. history and government topics. There are 100 civics questions on the naturalization test.
Corrections Education
With the assistance of volunteer tutors, we offer a variety of educational classes at Chippewa, Dunn, and Eau Claire County Jails. Some of the classes we offer include Vocational Literacy, job readiness, financial literacy, book club, and GED preparation. We also work with Huber program participants in Eau Claire and Chippewa Counties.
The highlight of the year is our Parents Sharing Books Program. Because of a generous donation from the Green Bay Packer Foundation, the Chippewa Falls High School Honors English class and the L.E. Phillips Library, inmates are able to select a book for their child. We record the inmate reading the book, then package the book along with a CD and send it to the child for Christmas.
Family Literacy
Do you have children and need to go back to school? We can help.
Since 1989, our Family Literacy program has helped hundreds of parents become full partners in their children’s education. While the adults are learning, their children participate in structured early childhood education. The free program runs Monday through Thursday morning , September until May (same calendar as the Eau Claire School District). You can find us in the Wilson Building, 510 South Farwell Street, Eau Claire.
The GED is accepted by most employers, technical colleges, and community colleges. Have you always wanted to complete your GED? Did you know that we can assist you in making this goal a reality? Our teachers and tutors can help!
In 2014 Wisconsin adopted the new GED (a trademarked acronym for the General Educational Development Tests). The GED is a series of tests used to measure the skills and knowledge in different topics including:

Math – Quantitative & algebraic problem solving

Science – Life science, physical science, earth and space science

Social Studies – Government, U.S. history, economics, geography and the world

Reasoning Through Language Arts – Ability to read closely, write clearly, and edit and understand written text

Civics – Students must answer 65 out of 100 citizenship questions correctly.
Graduates earn a GED credential. The new 2014 GED test format is computer-based only, without an option to be taken on paper.

Workplace Literacy
Are you an employer? Do your employees struggle with the English language? Do they need help with reading, writing or understanding English?
Partnerships with employers is an integral part of our organization. Together we’re addressing employers' needs that impact our community.
We work with employers to modify training materials and provide tutoring support for their employees.
We also provide opportunities for adults to gain skills in order to obtain a job, keep a job or get a better job:

ServSafe Food Handler’s Certification, focusing on safe storage and preparation practices, preventing cross contamination, using correct time/temperature controls, and proper cleaning and sanitizing;

CPR/AED Certification, developing skills in the basic techniques of adult, child and infant CPR; learning how and when to use an automated external defibrillator and practicing first aid for choking;

Business Speech, familiarizing students with the oral communication process, practicing the art of speaking with confidence in front of a group, critiquing one another’s speeches, and exploring effective job interviewing techniques;

Forklift Certification, including the terminology and physics of smooth, safe forklift operation demonstrating those skills in a warehouse setting; and
-
Students explored manufacturing or healthcare careers while staff & tutors supported them with math, medical terminology, and study strategies at Manufacturing and Health care academies offered in collaboration with Workforce Resources and Chippewa Valley Technical College(CVTC).
